This is an energy efficiency sector in fish smoking. The improved technology enables women fish processors to improve their income and health.

Water Bus is a Kisumu based ferry that operates around Lake Victoria. It provides safe, reliable and comfortable transport for populations in the area.

With the aim of reducing the degradation of mangrove forest in the zone, The African Women’s Network for Community Management of Forests (REFACOF) in collaboration with Cameroon Ecology, The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and the University of Douala installed one improved fish smoker made with bricks in Dahomey and 2 metallic stoves in Dahomey and Nyangadou, where large number of women processors are living .

Providing improved fish stoves and ovens, the project aims to provide economic and social support to women fish processors in Manoka. Additional income is generated from the increase in quantity of processed fish and the reduction of smoking time and firewood consumption.

It creates access for marginalized communities and offers environmentally friendly transportation. These ferries have significantly increased the mobility of communities around the Lake, while decreasing the number of drownings. The Water Bus has introduced safe, insured, reliable and comfortable transport. The project introduced a modern water transport namely the water bus to enhance safe mobility.

The associated benefits for women include reduced GBV, changing norms as more and more women become staff and pilots; increased job and income generating opportunities and health services and time savings provided by mobility.
