The Generation Equality Forum is a global gathering for gender equality convened by UN Women and co-hosted by the governments of Mexico and France, in partnership with youth and civil society. The Forum kicked off in Mexico City in March and will culminate in Paris from 30 June to 2 July 2021, launching a series of concrete, ambitious and transformative actions to achieve immediate and irreversible progress towards gender equality.
The Forum’s ambitions are carried through a bold feminist agenda and the work of a set of ‘Action Coalitions’. The result: tangible progress towards gender equality during the UN Decade of Action (2020-2030) to deliver the Sustainable Development Goals. Action Coalitions are global, innovative, multi-stakeholder partnerships that are mobilizing governments, civil society, international organizations, and the private sector to make 5 year commitments to these themes:
- Gender-Based Violence
- Economic justice and rights
- Bodily autonomy and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR)
- Feminist action for climate justice
- Technology and innovation for Gender Equality
- Feminist movements and leadership
WOCAN was invited to make a commitment to the Action Coalition for Feminist Action for Climate Justice, as follows, which is WOCAN’s priority program for the next 5 years:
“This program will improve the lives of at least 100,000 women by at least 10% in relation to time saving, health, income & assets, knowledge & education, food security and leadership through climate mitigation and adaptation projects. This will be done by a) generating at least 1 million W+ credits or tons of W+ labeled carbon credits and selling at least 500,000 of these; b) increasing the number of women’s enterprises/groups managing climate projects; c) developing the market for W+ units, d) establishing the Proof of Concept to catalyze new investments and e) building a consortia of gender and climate funders and investors. It will provide at least $500,000 in grants to women’s groups through the benefit-sharing from the W+ credit sales, and provide at least 1000 women’s groups with a sustainable revenue stream. Initial countries include India, Kenya, Nepal, Indonesia, and the USA (Hawai’i) with others added as per funder interests.”
